Small & Urban Farms
The Small and Urban Farms Program focuses on food safety issues unique to small-scale farms including integrated farms that grow livestock/poultry and crops on the same land. The program is focused on bringing a scientific approach toward food safety on small and urban farms which are often integrative (i.e. crops and livestock/poultry on the same land) and hence may have increased risk of microbial contamination. Monitoring of foodborne pathogens in the farm environment and understanding the prevalence of these pathogens in different environments in California is essential toward protecting public health and increasing the viability of these farms.
